SELKIES
Selkies
a.k.a. Seal Wife: are from Scottish, Irish,
Icelandic and Faroe Islands (in the Norwegian Sea) folklore. Most sightings
are near the Orkney and Shetland Islands.
When in seal form, the selkie comes ashore to sunbathe, removing its pelt,
becomes a beautiful and enchanting woman. It is also said to occur on
Midsummer’s Eve. It is also folk lored that selkies transform into humans
every ninth night. They are said to do this to frolic and dance on the solid
soil of land with much merry mirth. If a human male steals her pelt, she is
thus condemned to his whims and desires, usually to become his wife and bear
him beautiful children. The pelt is always hidden, an irreplaceable
treasure.
If the seal wife is fortunate enough to come across it, she will not hesitate to put it back on and head for the open seas, leaving her children and mortal life, behind. Reputed to return in seal form to watch her children grow and come to their aid if they are in peril upon the seas. An awesome movie to watch is: The Secret of Roan Inish
Male
selkies are also reported to have been seen.
Very handsome in their human appearance, male selkies have great
seductive powers over human women. They are reputed to seek out and woo the
wives of fishermen, whose husbands are away a great deal of the time. The
dissatisfied maiden also falls prey to their courtship. A euphoric, romantic
bliss surrounds the maid who is seduced by a selkie male. If a woman desires
to meet a selkie male, she has to go to the sea and shed seven tears
into the waves. If a girl goes missing at sea, it is assumed that she has
gone to be with her selkie lover.
